Gadani city is situated on the banks of Arabian Sea in the district of Lasbela in Baluchistan province of Pakistan. The nearest big city linked by road with Gadani is Karachi which lies in the south-east at 50 km from here. With a population of round 20000 inhabitants, Gadani is considered as a small city. Baluchi language with its local dialect ‘Lasi’ is spoken by the majority of its population and Sindhi is spoken by a small minority.
This city is known for its ship breaking yards where outdated ships from different countries are brought and broken. It used to be the world’s largest ship breaking area until 1980 and employed more than 28000 workers. Then, India and Bangladesh emerged as its competitors and took away a big part of business. Due to decline in its economic activity, a good part of its population shifted to other places. Today, there are hardly 5000 workers left in the city of Gadani and the number of ships broken here annually has been reduced to 120. Gadani today is ranked as world’s third largest ship breaking yard.
With the change of government, it is hoped that Gadani will find its way to success! Recently, the construction of a mega thermal project in collaboration with China has been inaugurated by the Prime Minister. It is supposed to produce around 6000 Megawatts of electricity at its completion. It is certainly considered as good news by the local population as it will generate many job opportunities.
