Makli Hill is located a few kilometres away from Thatta, the ancient capital of lower Sindh. It is reputedly the largest necropolis in the world, with a diameter of approximately 8 kilometres. It is inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage Sites list.
Makli Hill is the site of a million graves, tombs and mausoleums. It is truly the place where history starts to speak about its immaculate past and the legends and myths it has undertaken. Visiting it is an eerie, impressive and unforgettable experience. For over 1 000 years the Sindhi people have felt that there was something sacred about Makli, and a spiritual atmosphere still pervades the site today.
The place gives some idea of the self-importance and staggering wealth of the elite of nearby Thatta, and is the burial place of hundreds of royal figures, military commanders, Sufi saints, scholars, philosophers, poets, warriors and intellectuals. The tombs themselves vary in size and grandeur, but the most interesting fall into two groups: the more recent tombs of the Tarkhan kings, who ruled Sindh from 1545 to 1614; and the older tombs of the Sammah kings, who governed the province from 1337 to 1524. Tombs you should not miss at any cost include the ones of Jani Beg Tarkhan, Tughril Beg Tarkhan, Baqi Beg Uzbek, Isa Khan Tarkhan II, Jan Baba, Dewan Shurfa Khan, Sultan Jam Nizam-ud-din, as well as the shrines of Abdullah Shah Ashabi and Ali Shah Shirazi.
In the vicinity of Makli Hill, it would be a pity to skip the ruined Sammah Mosque, the Kalankot Fort and Hadiero Lake, a permanent natural salt lake surrounded by low hills. Like other lakes in Sindh, Hadiero is the winter quarters for thousands of birds, especially ducks, gulls, terns and pelicans. It is the perfect place for a picnic and a quiet day’s bird-watching.
