Tando Muhammad Khan, commonly called T M Khan, is a small town in the province of Sindh. It is located on the right bank of Phuleli Canal, about 35 kilometres away from Hyderabad, 80 kilometres from Sujawal, 87 kilometres from Badin, 105 kilometres from Thatta and 200 kilometres from Karachi. It also has a station on the Badin – Hyderabad railway line.
Tando Muhammad Khan was founded by Mir Muhammad Khan Talpur Shahwani, who died in 1813. During the British period, its status was updated to a municipality, and it became the seat of the local assistant collector. It was then carved out of Hyderabad district in 2005.
Today, 70% of the district population is engaged in agriculture. The main crops grown include rice, wheat, cotton and sugarcane – with the town boasting of four big sugar mills. The canals of Phuleli, Pinyari and Akram are the principal sources of water-reservoir for irrigation in the area.
Tando Muhammad Khan is quite famous for its hand-printed ajrak cloth fabrics, while it is also a good place to buy sussi (striped hand-loom). Both are symbols of traditional Sindhi culture, and are cheaper here than in the provincial capital Karachi.
Overall, the climate in the region is moderate. April, May and June are the hottest months, while December and January and the coldest ones, with minimum temperatures around 10°C. The monsoon dominates from July to September.
