Ayubia, named after General Muhammad Ayub Khan, second President of Pakistan, is a small town of the Khyber-Pakhtunkhaw. It is situated near the Murree Hills at an altitude of 1 300 meters, and approximately 100 kilometers away from Rawalpindi/Islamabad. A very famous tourist destination, it is home to the Ayubia National Park, a wide protected area where about 104 species of plants, 203 species of birds as well as rare animals can be found. It includes one of the oldest chair lifts of the area.
Once upon a time, Ayubia used to be a major summer resort for British governors who transferred their headquarters during the whole season to avoid the high temperatures of the plains. They were joined by many of the British wives and daughters of the men who remained in the rest of the country. On your way to Ayubia, you will pass by some buildings reminiscent of the British colonial era that was once prosperous.
As of today, Ayubia has become a hugely popular resort amongst Pakistanis. The new middle-class more specifically enjoys spending a few days there in family during the summer season, to respire fresh air, relax and seek tranquility when the temperatures soar to 40 degrees elswhere. Its geographical proximity also makes Ayubia very easily accessible.
Often billed as a tourist’s heaven, Ayubia offers various panoramic and picnic spots, with a wide range of activities available from mountain hiking, trekking, horseback riding to bird watching and wild boar hunting. There is also a chairlift in the central place of Ayubia that takes the tourists to a nearby summit for a view of the forested hills. This chairlift was the first recreation facility of its kind in Pakistan and is still a major attraction for visitors. At the top, drink and souvenir stalls are numerous.
The weather is very pleasant from April to September, while the valley is completely covered by snow from mid-December to mid-March. At that period, skiing, alpine skiing or cable car are a must.
