Bisham Bridge on Indus
|
|
Besham, also known as Besham Qala, is a small bazaar strung along the KKH in the Khyber-Pakhtunkhaw province, cut into the hillside above the Indus 28 kilometers from Thakot Bridge. Here the road from Mansehra and one of the old trade routes from Swat join. Halfway between Islamabad and Gilgit, Besham is a major stopping place for buses, and a good overnight place for tourists. There are plenty of local restaurants in the bazaar. Due to its geographic position on the famous Silk Route which connects Pakistan with China, most of the shops at Besham remain open 24 hours a day. The population here speak Pashto. From the PTDC Motel at Besham you can scramble down to the grey sandy shores of the Indus. For centuries a raft made of inflated cowskins used to ply its way across the river here, pulling upstream in the lee of the rocks and then drifting down with the current to the other side. The new bridge at Besham has done away with the raft and opened up the east bank of the Indus to jeep traffic. From here, the KKH connects Besham with Thakot, Sazin, Dassu, Chilas, Jaglot and Gilgit along the east bank. The people of the surrounding isolated valleys are subsistence farmers who cultivate wheat, barley and maize on irrigated terraces stacked up the steep mountainsides. Herds of goats, sheep and mountain cattle find pastures at the top ends of the valleys. The old trade route from Besham, west across the Shangla Pass to Swat and Peshawar, is suitable for ordinary traffic and is a magnificent drive.
