| Fairy Meadows are situated in the Gilgit-Baltistan province of Pakistan, 19 kilometers away up a track that leaves the KKH at Raikot Bridge near Chilas. The meadows are idyllic alpine pastures surrounded by pine forests on the northern slopes of Nanga Parbat, with breathtaking views of the snow-clad north face above. This is, according to many, the best place to admire the majestic beauty of Nanga Parbat, the 9th highest mountain in the world and the 2nd highest in the country.Hermann Buhl, the Austrian climber who made the first ascent of Nanga Parbat in 1953, named it ?Fairy Meadow? due to its wonderful scenery. Today, the meadow is still the perfect camping spot for trekkers and climbers; situated at an elevation of 3300 m. Most tourists - who come to simply enjoy the surroundings - stay there, as tents and food are easily available. New hotels have also been built and provide rooms at affordable rates, while locals have established a small village at the meadow.Apart from trekking, Fairy Meadows offer other activities, such as horse riding and fishing at the nearby Tarar lake. Polo matches are often organized for tourists and are a delight to watch. The lush green meadows can also serve as a football or cricket ground. On the route to the meadow, you can stop at the small villages of?Tatu and Fenturi.Fairy Meadows are closed in winter due to heavy snowfall and?are only accessible in summer, June/July being the best period.
